Niche Displacement for Wave Hill is an installation made specifically for the foyer entrance at Wave Hill’s Glyndor Gallery in the Bronx, New York. The oval shaped room architecturally mirrors itself and contains two niches on either side, for a total of four, that perfectly reflect each other. A photograph was taken of one of the niches and printed to match the color and scale so that it fit perfectly over the actual niche itself, turning a three dimensional space into a flat two dimensional representation. A small metal grate below one of the niches was also photographed and placed over the real grate on the opposite side of the room from the “fake” photographed niche. Both fakeries are revealed when a viewer walks by but the perspective of neither the niche nor the grate change, but remain permanently static and fixed.
